Countries’ representatives gather in Peru ahead of Summit of the Americas

20:06 | Lima, Feb. 8.

Representatives of the region’s governments on Thursday started negotiations to determine the anti-corruption commitments the heads of state and government will adopt at the 8th Summit of the Americas.

The talks were held within the framework of the Summit Implementation Review Group (SIRG), the core management body of the Summits Process.

It must be noted the SIRG meeting takes place in Lima on February 8-9.

The event was opened by the Organization of the American States (OAS) Assistant Secretary General Nestor Mendez and the National Coordinator of Peru and Chair of the Summits Process Antonio Garcia Revilla.

At the occasion, the Inca country proposed to adopt concrete measures to strengthen the fight against corruption, mainly in the fields of prevention, cooperation, and law enforcement.

In this sense, the Peruvian State prepared the draft titled “Commitment of Lima: Democratic Governance against Corruption,” which includes the forums’ preliminary conclusions of the civil society, private sector, young people, and other social actors, who are part of the preparatory process for the Summit.

During their participation, countries of the region thanked Peru for presenting the negotiating document that —from their point of view— is focused on achieving a concrete, practical and action-oriented result to reinforce the fight against corruption in the Americas.

Likewise, they expressed their willingness to achieve a consensus to define the commitments that presidents of the region will adopt during the Summit in Lima.

The Summit of the Americas will take place in Lima on April 13-14.
